MVP Garcia leads 5 players on All-Arrowhead Team for conference champion Chargers

The Sandburg men’s soccer team’s reward for winning the Arrowhead Conference title was five spots on the all-conference team, including the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Conference coaches voted Chargers freshman Luis Garcia as the Arrowhead MVP. He was joined on the all-conference team by fellow first-team picks Rodrigo De la Fuente and Enrico Augusto Rola as well as second-team selections Lucas Sa de Albuquerque Maranhao and Mario Segura.

Garcia, also an All-Region 4 Second Team pick this year, totaled five goals and an assist in three Arrowhead matches, including a hat trick in the Chargers’ 6-0 win Oct. 10 over Black Hawk. He scored at least one goal in each conference game.

De la Fuente, a sophomore forward, earned All-Arrowhead honors for the second straight year after being a second-team selection as a freshman. He also was a first-team all-region pick this season. De la Fuente tallied two goals and three assists while playing in just two conference contests this fall. He had a goal and two assists against Black Hawk and posted a goal and an assist in Sandburg’s 3-0 win Oct. 18 at Illinois Valley.

Rola, a freshman forward, struck for a goal in each of the Chargers’ three Arrowhead matches and finished second on the team to Garcia in conference goals. He converted on three of his nine shot attempts in Arrowhead play, and four of Rola’s shots ended up on frame.

Maranhao, a sophomore keeper, started all three conference games in net and conceded just one goal in 270 minutes of action. He recorded clean sheets against Black Hawk and Illinois Valley. Maranhao turned aside 20 of 21 shots he faced in Arrowhead play.

Segura, a sophomore center midfielder, collected an assist against Black Hawk as well as Illinois Valley as he finished second on the team in that category in conference play. Segura served as one of the Chargers’ tri-captains this season.

Sandburg went 3-0 in conference play to win the Arrowhead title, outscoring its opponents 12-1. Overall, the Chargers finished with an 11-3-3 record, which included a No. 19 ranking in the country to end the regular season.
