GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire men's basketball won their season opener 81-59 on Friday night against Dominican University.
Knox led the Stars the whole way after the Prairie Fire opened up with an 8-0 run to begin the game. Dominican never got within four points of Knox and by halftime the Prairie Fire led 39-30.
The Stars made a run at the beginning of the second half to pull within five points, but Knox quickly took a double-digit lead and never looked back.
Duane Goodman, Jr. led the Prairie Fire with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He also pulled in six rebounds. Jordan Rayner and Sean Gallery each added 16 points and six boards. Ryan Nixon grabbed eight rebounds and ended with seven points.
Knox shot 55.6% from the field in the game, including a 40% showing from beyond the arc. The Prairie Fire held the Stars to 43.4% from the field. Knox also out-rebounded Dominican 41-24.
"That was a great way to start the season," said head coach Ben Davis. "We had big stretches where we did some great things on the defensive end. Offensively, we played very unselfishly and were able to attack some matchups that we liked. With that being said, we still have a lot to clean up as we go on a tough stretch of games here in the next two weeks."
The Prairie Fire return to action when they host Westminster on November 10.
