Co-MVP Trinidad leads 4 Chargers on All-Arrowhead team

Freshman two-way player Yasiel Trinidad was voted the Arrowhead Conference’s co-Most Valuable Player as the Sandburg baseball team had four members earn all-conference honors.

Trinidad was joined on the All-Arrowhead Conference team by redshirt sophomore Derek Cintron, redshirt freshman Joel Medina and freshman Colton Allen.

Trinidad became the third Charger in the past four seasons and fourth in the last seven years to be voted Arrowhead MVP, joining Jack Shields (2023), Caileb Johnson (2022) and Jordan Chandler (2019). Trinidad shared the award with Black Hawk’s Elmer Figueroa as the two split the six votes by the league’s coaches.

An outfielder and righthanded pitcher from Kissimmee, Fla., Trinidad turned in a dominant spring in his first season with the Chargers. He appeared in all 20 Arrowhead games and led Sandburg with a .466 batting average, .515 on-base percentage, .914 slugging percentage, four home runs, 21 RBIs, 21 runs scored, 53 total bases and 14 extra-base hits over 69 plate appearances. Trinidad’s six stolen bases were second among Chargers, and he tied for second on the team with six doubles against conference opponents.

Trinidad was also Sandburg’s top hurler, making eight appearances on the mound in conference play. He led the squad with 30.2 innings, a 3-2 record, two complete games, two saves, 39 strikeouts and 11.45 strikeouts per nine innings.

Cintron, who hails from Davenport, Fla., saw time at second base, third base and shortstop. He compiled a .400/.419/.586 slash line over 74 plate appearances in Arrowhead action. Cintron led the team with eight doubles and was a perfect 7 for 7 in stolen-base attempts. Cintron’s batting average, slugging percentage, 14 runs, 16 RBIs, 41 total bases and 10 extra-base hits were second only to Trinidad among Sandburg players.

Medina, an outfielder from Kissimmee, Fla., hit .355/.400/.548 in 72 plate appearances in league play. He knocked out two homers, drove in 10, tied Cintron for second on the team with 14 runs and also tied for second with six doubles. Medina’s 34 total bases and eight extra-base hits ranked third on the team.

Allen, a catcher/first baseman from Galesburg, played in all 20 conference games and hit .373/.415/.407 over 65 plate appearances. The lefthanded-batting Allen scored seven runs, collected 10 RBIs, walked five times, had two doubles and finished with 24 total bases against Arrowhead pitching. His 22 hits tied for third on the team.
