Visiting Beardstown scored just 2:08 into the game and, despite a couple of close calls, was able to keep host Monmouth-Roseville off the scoreboard in a 3-0 boys soccer victory Monday night at Pattee Fields.
In the game’s early moments, Beardstown’s Luis Rios was sent into the box for a point-blank shot on Sailas Cung, M-R’s goalie. Cung saved the initial shot, but it went right back to Rios and ricocheted into the goal for a 1-0 Tiger lead.
With 4:02 left in the first half, Julius Ruiz doubled Beardstown’s lead with a strong individual effort, eluding a trio of M-R defenders before beating Cung to the near post.
The Titans got much more of the play in the second half, with a shot by Salvador Mora Ruiz rolling inches outside of the post, and a goal by Kevin Vazquez waved off for offsides. Beardstown notched the final goal of the game with 26:06 to play when Luis Hernandez hammered home a loose ball in the box.
Beardstown held a 14-5 edge in shots. Corners were 4-3 in favor of M-R.
Now 3-7-2 on the season, M-R will visit Macomb on Wednesday.
In the JV game, Dabens Saint-Martin’s goal lifted M-R to a 1-1 tie with Beardstown. The JV is now 6-4-2.
