Kolbe Hightower’s penalty kick with 6:16 left to play lifted the host Tornadoes to a 1-0 victory over Monmouth-Roseville Monday night in boys soccer action. The loss was M-R’s sixth one-goal setback of the season.
The hosts had the best chances of the early going, with Caden Rogers twice getting a good look at the goal from close range and Hightower hitting a long-range shot off the post. In the final six minutes of the first half, both Daniel Cinzah and Francisco Tomas Francisco were set up for close shots for M-R, but A-Town goalie Garron Mason came up with the save both times.
M-R’s Sailas Cung made two big second-half saves to keep the game scoreless, but M-R was called for a foul in the box and Hightower delivered the clutch PK.
M-R held a slim 19-17 edge in shots, but A-Town took five of the game’s six corners.
Now 5-12-2 on the year, the Titans return to action Saturday at Galesburg.
In the JV game, M-R’s Richard Herrera scored in the first minute and Ernesto Andrade and John Mya added second-half goals for a 3-0 victory to improve the Titans’ record to 7-6-4.
