WIU-QC Chess Club to Host March Madness Open

Checkmate! The Western Illinois University-Quad Cities Chess Club is hosting the Quad Cities March Madness Open 2024 chess tournament from 10 a.m.-6p.m. Saturday, March 16 at WIU-QC Riverfront Hall, rooms 103/104. This tournament will be an Iowa Mini-Grand Prix qualifier.


The tournament, which will include WIU-QC students, WIU Leathernecks Chess Club Moline and the Illowa Chess Club from the Quad Cities, is designed to explore students' minds through strategy and determination while forming new relationships.


Registration is required to participate and can be completed the day of the tournament from 8:30-9:30 a.m. the day of. All participants must bring sets and clocks. The USCF-Rated Open Section requires both USCF and IASCA membership; the USCF-Rated Reserve competition requires USCF membership only.


The schedule of the tournament includes:


 USCF-Rated Open Section (Iowa Mini Qualifier): 10 a.m. start, 1:15 p.m. start, 3:45 p.m. start and 6 p.m. start.


 USCF-Rated Reserve (Under 1400): 10 a.m. start, 1:15 p.m. start, 3:45 p.m. start and 6 p.m. start.


 Unrated Beginner Kids Section (four rounds): 10 a.m. start. $10 entry fee. 


Light refreshments and pizza will be served. Prizes for top finishers will be awarded following the tournament.
