The Monmouth College women's tennis team opened the season on August 31 with a tough 4-3 home loss to Central College. Using the new scoring format for Division III tennis, the Scots won the doubles point before going 2-4 in the six singles matches. New this season, whoever wins two doubles matches gets one point and the doubles matches are played as one set to six instead of eight.
Ivana Stefanova (Streamwood, Illinois) and Natalie Labicki (Antioch, Illinois) were both perfect on the day. They teamed at #1 doubles to win 7-6 (8-6) with their tiebreak win clinching the doubles point. Jennifer Shimmin (Monmouth, Illinois) and Kimber Calvert (Paris, Illinois) rallied from 3-2 down to win at #2 doubles 6-3, rattling off four straight games. Natalie Holst (East Moline, Illinois) and Alayna McKinley (Rock Island, Illinois) lost at #3 doubles 6-0.
Stefanova won at #1 singles 6-1, 6-2 and Labicki won at #2 singles 6-1, 6-1. Calvert fell at #3 singles 6-3, 6-2 and Shimmin lost at #4 singles 6-2, 6-0. Holst battled early but lost 7-5, 6-2 at #5 singles and McKinley lost 6-0, 6-1 at #6.
"We continue to show a lot of improvement from last year," said head coach Brian Dahlstrom. "We're looking forward to contributions from our depth to add to our season. Ivana continues where she left off last year and Natalie showed a lot of wisdom with her shot selection and savvy in the number two spot."
