The Monmouth College women's soccer team started the season on Friday with a 3-0 win at Eureka College. Sophomore Kiersten Medinger (Silvis, Illinois) scored twice in the first half while goalkeepers Bronte de Zwart (Adelaide, Australia) and Izzy Seipold (Peoria, Illinois) combined on the shutout.
"We came in today a little shorthanded and i was proud of how our players stepped up," said head coach Lucas Henderson. "We could've done a little more with our live play chances but I'm really encouraged by our execution on set pieces. We have a ways to go but this is a great start."
Monmouth had most of the action early but couldn't break through as one shot hit the woodwork and another hit the football goalpost. In the 32nd minute, Mariah Hobson (Princeton, Illinois) drew a foul in the box on a free kick and the referee awarded the Scots a penalty kick. Medinger stepped up and calmly slotted the PK past the Red Devils keeper for her third career goal.
Less than four minutes later the Scots won a corner kick off a deflected shot. Junior defender Natalie Morrow (Silvis, Illinois) took the corner and swung the ball in perfectly for her first career goal. Monmouth added one more in the first half as Molly Shook (Morton, Illinois) assisted Medinger's second goal of the game with 1:54 to play in the half.
Seipold took over in goal to start the second half, making her debut after missing last year with an injury. She did not have to make a save in the final 45 minutes while De Zwart made one save in the first half to earn the win.
