The Hispanic Latino Resource Group, Inc. awarded five scholarships of five hundred dollars each
to graduates of Hispanic descent of Galesburg High School.
The Adam Perez Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Cela Lopez, daughter of Risa & Manuel Lopez III. She will attend Washington University. Azaria Medina-Foshay, who received the Erica Hunter Memorial Scholarship, will attend Carl Sandburg College. She is the daughter of Lisa Medina-Foshay and Steven Foshay. The Jason Maulden Memorial Scholarship was awarded to
Damian Thomas, son of Kimberly Guerrero. Damian will attend the University of Illinois Aerospace Engineering Program. Nayana Medina-Foshay, daughter of Lisa Medina-Foshay and Steven Foshay received the Davis Camp Memorial Scholarship. She will attend Carl Sandburg College.
The Juan Davila Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Joshue Barrera, son of Beatriz Ramirez. Joshue will attend Carl Sandburg College. A John Higareda Community Memorial Award of $150.00 was presented to “It’s A Bear Necessity” Relay For Life team. John was active in the Hispanic Latino Resource Group for many years. His four daughters, in memory of their mother, Hortense Higareda, who died of lung cancer in 1995, formed the team 19 years ago and have raised $112,600 for the American Cancer Society.
The group donated $100.00 to the Galesburg Public Library Foundation in honor of the Mexican Community in Galesburg. HLRG began in 1997 and has awarded $37,660.00 in scholarships and
$6,935.00 in community awards since 2002. Current officers are Irene Ponce, president, Margo Davila, secretary, and Trish Johnson, treasurer. Donations for scholarships are still being accepted and can be mailed to HLRG, %Margo Davila, 1566 S. Seminary St., Galesburg, IL 61401.
