Junior goalkeeper Gavin Cottrell was one of the heroes as host Orion United held on for a 1-1 tie against visiting the Monmouth-Roseville Titans in Three Rivers Athletic Conference action Wednesday night.
Cottrell made eight saves, none bigger than the penalty kick he stopped with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game to preserve the 1-1 tie. M-R’s Daniel Cinzah had earned the PK by being fouled in the box as he dribbled toward goal, and it was Cinzah who stepped up to take the spot kick. But Cottrell made a diving save to his left. Cinzah had another scoring chance denied in the first half when a goal he scored was waved off for offsides after the officials met for nearly a minute to discuss the play.
Five minutes later, M-R did get on the scoreboard on a nice buildup down the right side. Cee Sarcomo’s cross was booted home on a first-touch finish by Yahir Serna with 5:30 left in the half.
The hosts got the equalizer eight minutes into the second half when Chase Laird’s 25-yard shot slipped under the crossbar over the head of M-R goalie Alex Sostarecz.
M-R held a 21-8 edge in shots, with Sostarecz making four saves.
