MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Monmouth-Roseville boys soccer team had that rainy day feeling after a 7-0 loss to visiting Mendota Saturday morning in Three Rivers Athletic Conference action at Pattee Fields.
Three names were on the Titans’ scouting report of the Trojans – MaxPreps’ No. 5-ranked team in Class 1A soccer – and that trio each scored multiple times, including Isaac Diaz, who netted Mendota’s first three goals, all in the first half. He hit a 30-yard shot inside the post, a roller that eluded M-R goalie Sailas Cung in the slippery conditions, and a header on a corner kick. Cesar Casas had Mendota’s other first-half goal at the 4:26 mark after the Titans’ defense couldn’t clear the ball.
In the second half, which was played in a steady – and sometimes significant – rain, Johan Cortez stole the ball from M-R’s defense and found the back of the net, then added a penalty kick goal. Casas made it 7-0 with 26:16 left in the game when he pounced on a loose ball in the box.
While improving to 13-2 on the season, Mendota held a 17-3 edge in shots.
Now 4-9-2, M-R suffered its first TRAC loss of the season. The Titans will take a 2-1-1 conference mark into Monday and Tuesday’s home games against league foes Kewanee and DePue/Hall.
Monmouth-Roseville’s JV lost 1-0 to fall to 6-6-2 on the year.
