Two goals by Isidro Martinez and the stellar goalkeeping of Gustavo Bermudez lifted the Kewanee Boilermakers to a 3-2 victory over Monmouth-Roseville Monday night at Pattee Fields.
The Boilers jumped ahead 2-0 in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference game, with Martinez netting the first of those scores eight minutes into the first half. Fifteen minutes later, Alex Barron doubled Kewanee’s lead with a blast from 25 yards out. Both goals came against the run of play, as M-R held a 14-7 edge in shots through the first 40 minutes.
The Titans put up a spirited second-half rally, with Cee Sarcomo twice getting loose down the right side and sending in a cross. Kevin Vazquez converted the first cross for a goal with 26:33 remainingand, less than two minutes later, Daniel Cinzah first-timed Sarcomo’s cross into the back of the net to tie the score.
The teams remained deadlocked for the next 13 minutes before Martinez headed in a corner kick from Kingston Peterson, Kewanee’s only one of the game.
Bermudez finished the game 11 saves, including four outstanding ones, the final one tipping a goal-bound shot by Sebastian Aguilera-Perez over the crossbar. M-R’s Sailas Cung had five saves. M-R held a 24-12 edge in shots and took six corners, including one in the final seconds.
For the Titans, who fell to 4-10-2, it was their fourth one-goal loss of the season. They’ll be back in action Tuesday at home against another TRAC foe, DePue/Hall.
The JV game ended in a 0-0 tie. M-R is now 6-6-3.
