With less than a minute to play, DePue/Hall scored on its only shot of the second half to stun Monmouth-Roseville in the quarterfinals of the inaugural Three Rivers Athletic Conference tournament, which is being hosted by top-seeded Mendota.
Earlier in the week, M-R defeated DePue/Hall by a 4-0 score, but it was the lower-seeded squad that had the best chance of the first half, narrowly putting a shot wide in front of an open Titan net.
The Titans regrouped at halftime and dominated for most of the final 40 minutes. Three of their shots were pushed aside by DePue/Hall goalie Aaron Lopez for corners. He finished with six saves in posting the shutout.
With just under a minute to play, DePue/Hall was awarded a free kick near midfield and put the ball into the box. A redirect put the ball at the feet of Grabiel Cano, who put his shot inside the near post and past M-R goalie Sailas Cung.
To that point, the Titans held an 11-0 edge in second-half shots. It finished 14-3 in favor of M-R, and the Titans took all six of the game’s corners.
Squaring off Tuesday in Mendota will be the hosts, who’ll play Orion, with Kewanee battling DePue/Hall. The winners will meet in Thursday’s championship game.
Next up for M-R is a road game at Abingdon/Avon Monday. The Titans are now 5-11-2 on the year.
